Description
Number 36, formerly known as the Commercial Hotel, is a mid-19th century building that now operates as a restaurant. It features red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has an irregular plan situated on a corner site, with a canted corner. It stands three storeys tall over cellars and has four windows facing Derby Street, plus the canted corner to the left. The facade includes a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and projected eaves supported by a large console at the right-hand corner.
The facade has a round-headed doorway in the third bay, framed by a stone architrave with fluted Doric semi-columns and an entablature, topped with an altered fanlight. The windows have raised sills and wedge lintels; those on the ground floor have early 20th-century glazing, while the first floor features 12-pane sashes, and the centre pair on the second floor has 6-pane sashes, with the outer windows being blind. The canted corner to the left has matching sashed windows on the first and second floors, along with a mask on the frieze. Various chimneys are present.
The left return wall, which faces Railway Road, has five bays and includes a doorway in the fourth bay with an inset pilastered doorcase and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. The fenestration mirrors that of the front, including some blind windows. The building forms a group with Nos 11 and 13 opposite, as well as the railway bridge and drinking fountain to the east.
