Description

The Ormskirk Division Agricultural Club, originally built as a dispensary in 1830 and later altered, features a sandstone ashlar facade, with the sides and rear constructed from red brick in English garden wall bond. The building has a stone slate roof with a central skylight and is set back from the road, featuring a raised forecourt. Designed in the Greek Revival style, it is a single-storey structure with three symmetrical bays. The central bay boasts a pedimented tetrastyle Doric portico, with pilastered corners and an entablature that includes a cornice and blocking course. Under the portico, there is a tall doorway with a moulded architrave, glazed and panelled double doors, and a wide overlight with geometrical glazing bars. Flanking the doorway are 16-pane sashed windows, each with a moulded architrave. Access to the portico is via a flight of steps that spans the width of the central bay, leading up through a raised flagged forecourt with ashlar retaining walls. The left side wall of the building features a blocked doorway in the center and an inserted doorway near the rear corner. Inside, the central hall has pilastered walls, with the left and right sides interrupted by inserted arches, a coved ceiling, and a large rectangular skylight, although the interior has otherwise been altered.
