Description

The Police Station, located on Lower Clapton Road, was built in 1904 by John Dixon-Butler for the Metropolitan Police. This building features red brick with stone dressings and a slate mansard roof with dormers. It stands three storeys high, with attics and a semi-basement, and has attached buildings that are two to three storeys tall.

The main facade has a double front with five windows. At the center, there is a stone doorcase with a segmental arched hood supported by paired elongated console brackets on pedestals, leading to double panelled doors that are approached by steps. The outer bays feature three-light canted bay windows on the ground and first floors, which are topped by stone balconies. Narrow architraved windows flank the entrance, with a rectangular architraved window above that has small lights.

On the second floor, there is a sill band with architraved windows consisting of two lights and a central single light, with the three grouped together in the center. The stone bracketed eaves cornice is topped by a large central pediment that has three similar grouped windows and a narrow lancet with a sill band above. The pediment is flanked by two-light dormers.

The return wall gables form chimneys, with the right gable featuring two chimney breasts that rise from the first floor and join to create a round-arched recess at the third floor, complete with a stone keystone and vousoirs. There are recessed sashes at each floor level, and the chimneys extend through the apex of the gable as separate stacks linked by a stone balustrade.

An attached two-storey extension has two sashes at ground floor level, paired by a stone lintel with a bowed cornice supported on two central brackets. The first floor features three slightly bowed central sashes with a sill band and a continuous cornice, topped by a parapet. The recessed block has all windows at ground floor, while the upper floors mostly have two-light sashes with stone sill and floor bands, along with tall slab chimney stacks leading to hipped roofs. There are attached cast iron railings on a low brick wall surrounding the areas, and a lamp standard of the Windsor type lantern with blue glass inscribed "Police".
