Description

The Horse and Chains Public House is a building with origins dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It was extended in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with further alterations in the late 19th century and 20th century. The structure features a timber frame, roughcast, and part weatherboarding, with extensions in colourwashed brick and tiled roofs.

The original cottage has a two-bay main range that now appears as a crosswing to the right, with a lower wing creating an L-plan. The building is two storeys high with an attic. The main gable is located at the front right, and there is a 19th-century canted bay window on the ground floor, along with a first-floor glazing bar casement and a small attic window. Inside, exposed purlins and a wall plate are visible.

To the right, there is a lower timber-framed wing with a later glazed entrance porch at the angle. The right end features weatherboarding and exposed purlins. At the rear of the main range, there is a large external stack. To the left, a late 18th-century or early 19th-century two-storey block includes two ground floor glazing bar sash windows, one with 18 panes and the other with 30 panes, the latter set under a cambered head. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window and sprocket eaves, along with a left end stack. Further left, there is a one-storey late 19th-century addition with a projecting gabled bay at the front and a left end stack. There is a catslide roof over the additions at the rear of both later blocks, and a low hipped wing at the rear of the late 18th-century or early 19th-century block. Later single-storey flat-roofed additions are present but are not of special interest.
