Description

Lululand is a fragment of a large house, now serving as the facade for a club building. It was begun in 1886 and completed in 1894 for Sir Hubert von Herkomer, a Royal Academician, with elevations designed by H.H. Richardson. The structure is made of ashlar and snecked Bavarian grey tufa, with rock-faced red sandstone dressings, showcasing a Free Romanesque style.

The building features a large entrance porch, which was originally the base of a four-storey tower, and a short three-window range set back to the left. There are steps leading up to a timber panelled door, which has a multi-panelled lower half and hollow moulded frames around the three upper panels. The porch has splayed ashlar reveals and a heavily voussoired sandstone round arch over a lintel, with imposts adorned with free acanthus ornamentation in a band. The tympanum above the arch also features similar relief carving with hollow and roll moulded surrounds. A massive battered sandstone plinth supports the porch, and there is a sandstone course at key level. The porch is truncated with a stepped parapet.

On the left return, there is a tall casement window in a reveal. The three-window range to the left has a similar plinth with heavily blocked sandstone surrounds to the vertical casements and a coped parapet. At the left end, a wall breaks forward, displaying a remnant of scrolled acanthus relief carving at the top.

Lululand is named after Herkomer's second wife, Lulu Griffiths, and is notable as the only European work by H.H. Richardson. Most of the original building was demolished in 1939, and the structure at the rear is not of special interest.
