Description

The monument is located at the center of The Bushey Rose Garden, on the site of the Herkomer Art School. It was built in 1912 and designed by T H Mawson in collaboration with Sir H Herkomer, who also designed the garden. The monument is made of Bavarian tufa and its design may reflect Buddhist symbolism. It features a broad quatrefoil base with torus and scotia mouldings, and there are flower beds in each foil. At the center stands a rectangular pier with chamfered corners and a coved minor cornice beneath a plain block top. The continuous moulded cornice steps out over free-standing shafts at the angles, which have spurs at their base. Mawson created the garden in exchange for having his portrait painted by Herkomer.
