Description
The barn at Childs Farm, located 15 meters to the southwest of the house, dates from the early 17th century. It features a timber frame set on a low tarred brick sill, with black weatherboarding and a steeply pitched roof now covered in black corrugated iron. This tall five-bay barn faces north along the road and has double doors on each side in the middle bay. It includes swept jowled posts and long curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams, with inclined queen struts leading to slender principals. Each slope has a single butt-purlin, jointed in line, along with added strainers at the mid bay. The walls have a mid-height rail, tenoned in line, and small tension braces at the lower part of the corner posts. The barn has separate doorposts and is a prominent feature at the entrance to the village conservation area.
