5/31 Spirit Bridge in Japanese Garden at Garden House - 20m to SE of house

Bridge. 1912 built by Enomoto in Japan for Herbert Goode (1865- 1937) a wealthy glass and china merchant who built the Japanese Garden in 1905-26. Timber, partly painted. An arched narrow wooden bridge with 4-bay twin-rail balustrades, partly infilled. The 4 main posts on each side have onion shaped finials. It crosses the narrow part of the Fox Lake and is modelled on the sacred bridge at Nikko in Japan called SHIN-KYO (Spirit Bridge). (Japanese Garden (1933) 10).
