5/23 Small Resting House in Japanese Garden at - Garden House 30m to SSE of house

Resting house. Erected here 1905-26, probably by S Kusumoto, for Herbert Goode (1865-1937) a wealthy glass and china merchant who began the Japanese Garden in 1905. Timber frame with timber floor raised on stones. Pyramidial thatched roof. A small open- fronted shelter facing W over the Fox Lake. Approached by stone steps. Open-work screens to flank walls and L-shaped bench against infilled rear wall. Of traditional Japanese design intended for resting on mountain slopes. (Japanese Garden (1933) 5-6).
