Description

This small resting house was built between 1905 and 1926, likely by S Kusumoto, for Herbert Goode, a wealthy glass and china merchant who initiated the Japanese Garden in 1905. The structure features a timber frame with a timber floor raised on stones and has a pyramidal thatched roof. It is an open-fronted shelter that faces west over the Fox Lake and is accessed by stone steps. The walls are flanked by open-work screens, and there is an L-shaped bench against the infilled rear wall. The design is traditional Japanese, intended for resting on mountain slopes.
