Description

This resting house is located within the Japanese Garden at Garden House, approximately 70 metres to the south-south-east of the main house. It was built between 1923 and 1926, personally designed by the garden’s designer, S. Kusumoto, for Herbert Goode, a wealthy glass and china merchant who initiated the Japanese Garden in 1905. The structure is a timber-framed, single-storey, open-sided shelter facing north. It has low screens to the front and side, and a traditional roof structure built in stages using interwoven beams, a technique known as Aziro-Gumi. The floor is designed to resemble the shell of a tortoise, symbolizing good luck.
