Description

The farmhouse at Childs Farm is a building that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with a hall section that has been fronted in brick. The eastern wing and a parallel rear wing were constructed in the early 19th century. The structure features a timber frame, with the western wing set on a flint sill and tile pinnings beneath the sill plate, as well as red brick angles. The exterior is roughcast with a dark weatherboarded apron, while the hall range and the eastern wing and rear extension are cased in grey brick. The roofs are steep and covered with old red tiles.

The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high, with a central chimney. The hall range faces south and includes a two-storey jettied western crosswing and a two-storey eastern crosswing from the 19th century. The entrance is located at the eastern end of the hall range, and there is a separate door leading into the western crosswing. The southern front features two gabled dormers with three lights at the eaves of the hall range, along with ground floor windows that are two-light and three-light transomed casements with segmental arches. There is also a four-panel flush boarded door.

The western wing has heavy brackets supporting the jetty, and there is a step up to a boarded door with a two-light casement window with an internal shutter to the left. The first floor has a similar three-light window with a drip board and bargeboard at the gable. The eastern wing is adorned with a cusped bargeboard and pendant, and it features a triple sash window on each floor. The central chimney of the hall has an old moulded cap.
