Description
This barn, located 15 metres east of Cowards, dates from around 1700. It features a timber frame that is weatherboarded and sits on a low red brick sill. The steeply pitched roof was originally thatched but is now covered with corrugated iron. The barn has a tall, three-bay design without aisles, facing north, and includes a central projecting gabled porch. It has unjowled posts with staggered mid-height rails between them, and braces that support heavy square softwood tie-beams. The roof is constructed with queen-strut trusses in a clasped purlin style. This barn is the last remaining structure of a courtyard of farm buildings that can be seen in an old photograph of the house.
