Description
The 17 stone lanterns in the Japanese garden at Fanhams Hall were created between 1901 and 1905. They are part of a garden designed by Professor Suzuki, following plans by Mr. Inaka for R.B. and A.E. Page Croft. Made from Japanese grey granite, the lanterns are turned and carved, featuring various stylized patterns. Most lanterns are approximately 1.5 meters high, though some are significantly taller and have multiple pagoda roofs. Each lantern consists of a pierced stone block, typically six-sided, topped with a projecting carved hipped roof or cap. The lantern block is supported by a carved capital on a short column, which usually has an annulet, and rests on a carved base that may be made from a natural stone. The taller lanterns with multiple pagoda roofs have a distinctive arched base supported by four pillars.
