Description
Cowards is a house dating from the 16th century, with a floor inserted around 1700 and an extension added to the rear in 1964. It features a timber frame that is roughcast in places, along with some weatherboarding, and has a steep old red tile roof. The house is a three-unit, one and a half storeys structure with a large central chimney and a lobby entry. There is stair trimming at the rear of the stack. The building has a four-bay design with jowled posts and a clasped purlin roof supported by Queen-post trusses. The floor consists of squared or quartered timber joists, which are carried on roughly squared axial beams. In the parlour, there is a chamfered and stopped beam that may have been intended to support a chimney hood at the location of the current central stack. A large curved brace connects to the tie-beam, and each wallplate features a short edge-halved scarf with bridled butts. The front of the house, which faces west, has three windows, with the upper windows rising above the eaves in small gables. The windows are flush sash with small panes, and there is a matching rear wing extension.
