Description
The Windmill Public House is a late 16th-century building that has been altered around 1800. Originally a house, it features a timber frame with a plastered exterior and a colourwashed brick ground floor, topped with a hipped slate roof. The two-storey structure is set on a bank above the road and faces north.
The left side of the building was once a side-jettied end-chimney plan house, which has three steps leading up to a central door. There are external gable chimneys positioned forward of the ridge, and a winding stair located in the southeast corner. The right side served as former service rooms and a coach house, likely with jettied accommodation above. Around 1800, the front wall was raised and a new continuous hipped roof was added. At this time, the jetties were underbuilt in brick, and the current windows were inserted.
The front features four flush box sash windows with 6/6 panes. The entrance includes a half-glazed panelled door with a moulded surround and a flat moulded hood supported by bold shaped brackets. There are also a plain boarded door and double doors on the right side. A weatherboarded extension is set back at the west end.
Inside, the east room has a moulded dado rail, large fielded panelling, a cross of cased beams, and a large open fireplace. The west room retains the former front corner post with a portion of the jetty-bearer still in place. The Windmill Public House serves as an important focal point on the main street, aligned with views towards the church to the south.
