Description

Oven Cottage and Wisteria Cottage, a pair of late 18th-century labourers' cottages, stand as a single building along Cambridge Road in Thundridge. The cottages are timber-framed and plastered with a black painted plinth. They have a steep, old red tile roof that extends to the rear, covering the original two-storey, three-window façade facing east. A central chimney serves as a lobby entry to Oven Cottage (No. 23). The entrance to Wisteria Cottage (No. 24) is now located at the northern end. Originally, twin central doors may have opened into the space created by the chimney. The windows are two-light casements with small panes, and a narrower window sits above the central door. The timber framing is unusual, with principal timbers held together by wood pegs in mortise-and-tenon joints, while the intermediate wall studs are nailed to the frame. Originally, there was no infill between the studs, but the spaces were later plastered with laths on each face.
