Description
No. 27 Ermine Street is a schoolmaster's house built around 1894 for the nearby National School for Infants, which was also established in 1894 with E S Hanbury as treasurer, as noted on a plaque on the school porch. The house is constructed of red brick with moulded stone dressings and features a pebbledashed jettied and gabled upper floor above the front porch. It has a steep handmade red tile roof and is designed in the Arts and Crafts Style, standing one and a half storeys tall and located by the school gate, facing east.
At the northern end, there is a contemporary single-storey service range extending to the rear. The design is asymmetrically balanced, with the road front showcasing a moulded stone Tudor arched door featuring sunk spandrels. To the left of the door is a boarded door with hinge plates decorated with flowers, and a 2-light ovolo moulded mullioned stone window. The jettied upper floor is accented with a moulded bressumer on three sides. To the right, there is a 3-light mullioned and transomed ovolo stone casement window with a label, and a boldly projecting chimney is positioned to the left of the porch.
The gabled south end facing the school yard has a boldly projected gable top supported on wooden brackets from stone corbels, sheltering a tall two-storey canted bay window with leaded casements set between deep bands of render. Additionally, there is a small polygonal bay window at the angle with the rear range. This house is an unusually decorative small building that holds significance in the street scene.
