Description
No. 2 Kildare Terrace is a board school teacher's or caretaker's house built in 1884, likely designed by Richard Adams. The house is constructed of red brick with moulded and cut brick details, topped with a slate roof featuring diminishing courses. It has two storeys with an attic and consists of two bays by one bay.
The gable end facing the road includes a door with an overlight to the right, a four-pane sash window to the left on both the ground and first floors, and another four-pane sash window in the centre of the gable. These windows are accented by slightly shouldered brick arches and stone sills. The right side of the house, which faces the school yard, has an entrance on the right, a small sash window in the centre, and a four-pane sash window to the left, again on both floors.
The plain design of the house is enhanced by bands of patterned brickwork at the first-floor and eaves levels, creating a geometric pattern reminiscent of quatrefoils and cusped recesses. Additional decorative elements include a moulded eaves cornice, brick kneelers, stone gable copings, a strapwork pattern in the gable apex, and two moulded brick stacks at the rear of the ridge. The interior has not been inspected. This house is noted for its group value within the context of similar structures.
