Description
The former railway repair shop, built around 1847, is now used for commercial storage. It was designed by Thomas Grainger and John Bourne for the Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate and corrugated iron roof. It is a long, single-storey rectangular structure with bays defined by brick pilasters that rise to an eaves band. Each bay has a round-arched window, some of which still have early glazing while others are blocked, and all have projecting stone sills.
The north front includes a blocked doorway that once provided access to the canal side and features a taller, 20th-century projection with a corrugated iron roof. The left side of the building has three tall eaves stacks, skylights, and a hipped roof with two eaves stacks at the left end. The right side has short eaves stacks and a continuous ridge louvre, with a coping that separates it from the corrugated iron-roofed section on the far right. The left return mimics the style of the Roundhouse and has three bays, including a central blocked segmental-arched entrance, a cornice, and a blocking course.
Inside, the building features timber queen-post roof trusses. A water tower once stood to the east of the building and was linked to it. C19 and C20 additions are present but are not considered of special interest.
