Description
Monk Bridge is a road bridge that spans the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, built in 1886 by Hewson. It features a lattice iron girder design with decorative cast-ironwork applied to the inside facing of the roadway. The bridge is supported by large stone abutments topped with capstones and has a prominent fielded-panel on the outside. On the inside facing of the road, there is a circular panel displaying the Leeds coat of arms, surrounded by vermiculated spandrels. The main span crosses the River Aire and continues over the canal with a single span of cast-iron segmental-arched girders.
