Description

The Globe Iron Foundry fitting up shop, now used as workshops, was built around 1844 and altered in the 20th century. It features white-painted brick in English bond with a roof made of three parallel narrow gabled ranges covered in 20th-century tiles, supported by paired eaves brackets. The building has four storeys and five first-floor windows facing Globe Road, which are set under segmental arches with 20th-century frames and stone sills; the top storey windows are almost square. On the ground floor, there are two wide entrances at the center and left, with one blocked. Steps lead up to a narrow door with an overlight on the far right, next to a five-light window with slender glazing bars. The rear, canal-facing side has a blocked door that was formerly a window, flanked by narrow windows on the left; on the far right is a round-arched opening with a 20th-century window frame, and there is one window above with the top-floor window blocked. The interior, not seen in detail, features a front entrance that leads into a staircase lobby, where a straight flight of stairs with bulbous turned balusters rises to the first floor. The Globe Iron Foundry was established on this site in 1844, which also gave its name to the newly created road. This building likely served as the fitting-up shop and possibly the engine house, as suggested by the openings on the rear right.
