Description
The Tower Works boiler house chimney, also known as Verona Tower, is a notable structure built in 1864 and restored in 1989. Designed by Thomas Shaw for TW Harding's Tower Works, it features polychrome brick construction with a square plan. The chimney has a bracketed cornice, a three-light arched 'belfry' stage, and a deep bracketed cornice leading to an octagonal top stage. It is adorned with round-arched arcaded panels that have bracketed sills. The design was inspired by the taller Lamberti Tower in Verona, reflecting the Italianate style that was popular for industrial buildings in the mid-19th century. This chimney exemplifies the high quality of workmanship and materials used at the Tower Works. The interior has not been inspected. For more historical context, refer to the Tower Works entrance range.
