Description
The former flax warehouse to Marshall Mills, built in 1808 and altered in the 20th century, is located on Marshall Street in Holbeck, Leeds. Constructed for John Marshall, the building features brick in English garden wall bond with a slate roof. It is three stories tall and has a ten-window range. The exterior includes segmental brick-arched doors and windows, with small-pane glazing and projecting stone sills. Some windows have been inserted, and there is an original door to the right of center, along with second-floor loading doors on the west side facing the yard.
Inside, the yard door on the right leads into the original stairwell, which has slate-type stone cantilevered treads that are worn and repaired, with two straight flights to each floor and a wooden handrail. The interior also features cruciform-section cast-iron columns that support inverted T-section cast-iron beams, from which segmental brick arches spring. This building was the first constructed by Marshall on the south side of Hol Beck during his expansion in 1808 and represents an early use of the cast-iron frame, being the earliest surviving example of his Leeds buildings to utilize the cast-iron column and beam and brick-arch system. The warehouse is situated at the north end of a row of mill buildings on Marshall Street.
