Description
A former ironworks, dating to the late 18th century, it was remodelled in 1863 and is now a shop and office. The building is located on Piercy End, Kirkbymoorside. The ground floor features cast-iron shop fronts, while the first floor is constructed of orange-red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with ashlar quoins; a dressed stone rear elevation; and a concrete pantile roof with brick stacks. The front elevation has two shop fronts and a carriage arch that leads to workshops at the rear. It has a two-storey, three-window design. The shop fronts are framed by moulded cast-iron pilasters, beneath decorated consoles, supporting elliptical arched fascia panels with a frieze. Plate glass shop windows are divided by slender cast-iron colonettes. The left-hand shop includes a 19th-century half-glazed and panelled door to the right of the window, while the right-hand shop has a 20th-century door. An elliptical fanlight with Gothic glazing is above the right-hand shop. Cast-iron panels display the words 'GAS' above the left shop, 'WORKS' above the right shop, and 'FOUNDRY' above the right front. A decorated 1863 cast-iron riser is located beneath the right-hand shop window. The first floor has three 12-pane sash windows beneath plain, heavy lintels, with end stacks present. The rear building is not of particular architectural interest.
