Description

The former Union Ironworks office and showroom is a Gothic style building dating from the 19th century. It stands two storeys high and features three bays, constructed of yellow brick. The front wall is currently pebble-dashed, and the decorative slate roof includes bands of light-grey slates along with yellow-brick ridge stacks. The left side has gabled rear projections that have a lower eaves line.

The central doorway is framed by plain square jambs with crocket capitals, a moulded shouldered lintel with orbs in the spandrels, and a cornice. It has double panelled doors with an overlight, all set within a recessed segmental-pointed brick arch. Above the entrance, the central bay features a narrow window positioned above the eaves, topped with a gablet that has plain barge boards. The architrave displays crocket capitals leading to a pointed arch, which contains an inner arch with a tall two-pane sash window.

The outer bays have three-light hipped bay windows on the lower storey, supported by detached ringed colonnettes and crocket capitals. These windows were boarded up at the time of inspection. The upper storey features narrower, shallow three-light bay windows that extend above the eaves, also under gablets supported by kneelers and with plain barge boards. The windows consist of two-pane horned sashes framed by square mullions with crocket capitals on the right-hand bay, and ringed colonnettes on the left-hand bay, all under pointed heads with quatrefoils in the tympana. Linked hood moulds with foliage stops are present above the windows.

The gable ends are made of yellow brick with blue-brick banding. The right gable end has two two-pane sashes in the upper storey, set under segmental pointed heads that include blank stone tympana. The left gable end mirrors this but features blocked openings with stone lintels and segmental brick relieving arches on the lower storey. Lean-to structures have been added to the rear of the building.
