Description

Tontine House, originally a posthouse, is now a house and shop located in Kirbymoorside Market Place. Built in 1823, it has undergone later extensions and alterations for John Atkinson. The front is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, which is now painted, while the sides and rear are made of coursed rubble. The front features a slate roof, while the rear has pantiles, and there are brick stacks.

The original inn accommodation was modified in the mid-19th century to create a shop at the left end. The entrance is a panelled house door situated to the right of the center, accessed by a flight of steps and topped with a fanlight. The doorcase is adorned with a dentilled cornice supported by scrolled consoles featuring tritons' heads, along with panelled pilasters. The shop front at the left end has a frame with a dentilled cornice on panelled pilasters and slender, shaped glazing bars. There are canted bays with a dentilled cornice and arched sashes on either side of the house door. The first floor has four 4-pane sashes, complete with stone sills and wedge lintels. The building features coped gables and moulded kneelers, with end and center stacks.

Inside, there is an open-string staircase with shaped cheekpieces, stick balusters, a turned newel with reeded bands, and a moulded handrail. The attics contain re-used 17th and 18th-century panelling. To the right, the carriage entrance has a rusticated elliptical arch with a 12-pane sash above, framed in a raised squared architrave with a continuous sill band. The building is included for its group value.
