Description

Foundry House and Satchell's Off Licence is a shop with a house to the rear, dating from around 1830. It is located on North Street in Burnham Market and is now divided into two separate residences. The building is constructed of gault brick with slated roofs.

The two-bay shop front has original fixed casement windows with large panes, divided by moulded glazing bars and margin lights. The recessed central entrance has a pair of double doors with similar glazing details, and a rectangular fanlight above. Panelled bases are present below the windows and doors, and fluted end pilasters have bases and capitals. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the shop front, and cast iron sills with pierced Greek key fret decoration are present. Above the shop, two first-floor sash windows have glazing bars, set within flat rubbed brick arches. Unmoulded brick end pilasters are present, along with a deep moulded eaves cornice. A cast iron moulded plinth runs around the entire building. The roof is hipped at the ends with ridge stacks.

A single-storey wing is attached to the west, featuring a recessed bay with a single sash window and a semi-circular rubbed brick arch. The return to the west has two arched bays and a modern boarded double door under a rubbed brick arch. The house, attached to the rear, forms an "L" shape. The west entrance has ground-floor casement windows and first-floor sash windows, along with a brick porch with a moulded doorcase architrave and a six-panel door. A cast iron plinth and sills with Greek key fret piercings are present. The east-facing garden facade has a ground-floor sash window, three first-floor cast iron casements with Gothic arched top lights and stained glass spandrels, and a stone coped eaves parapet. A north end pilaster marks the end of the shop, with a blank first-floor window opening above.

The building demonstrates the cast iron architectural detail characteristic of the early 19th century Burnham Market foundry.
