Description
The National Westminster Bank, originally a chapel built around 1840 and later converted into a school, is now a bank located on North Street in Burnham Market. The building is constructed from pebble flint with gault brick dressings and features cast iron casements and decorations. It is a single-storey structure with a three-bay facade and a four-bay west return.
The facade includes two cast iron casements with glazing bars and ogee Gothic heads set within rectangular frames, surrounded by moulded brick architraves and drip mould heads. The central door, also framed with a moulded brick architrave, has six panels that are raised and fielded, with two glazing bars. The building has a brick plinth and end pilasters with moulded capitals, along with elaborately moulded brick and wooden eaves. The roof is hipped, and the returns feature windows with similar details.
Paired cast iron railings attached to the facade have a cast iron plinth and elaborately moulded rails topped with fleur-de-lys spear heads. A cast iron coping on the brick wall to the west includes details that identify it as the work of the Burnham iron works.
