Description

Briar Cottage and Fern Cottage are a pair of cottages located on the south side of Market Place in Burnham Market. The rear of the cottages dates to the 17th century, but the facades were rebuilt in the 18th century. They are constructed of red brick, with a red pantiled roof.

Briar Cottage, on the east side, features a canted bow window. It has an early 19th-century fixed casement window with sash-type glazing bars, altered side lights, and a single 2-light casement window on the first floor with glazing bars. A partially glazed door dates to around 1900. A platband runs along the first floor and eaves. Fern Cottage, on the west side, has whitewashed brick. It includes a ground floor tripartite plate glass sash window dating to around 1900, and a first-floor sash window with glazing bars. The cottage also boasts a fine early 19th-century doorcase, consisting of two fluted Greek Doric pilasters, an entablature with triglyphs and guttae, and a cornice. The door itself is raised and fielded, with nine panels; the centre panels are decorated with corner paterae, and the two upper panels are glazed.
