Description
This is a carpet warehouse, originally a United Methodist Free Church, built around 1880 and altered in the 20th century. The designs were by Thomas Ambler of Leeds. It is constructed in a Baroque Revival style, with an ashlar front and brick sides, featuring stone dressings. A former Sunday School cross wing is located at the rear.
The imposing front has a deep plinth and is dominated by a large, bowed portico with Corinthian columns. Above the portico is a balustrade with urn finials on the dies, extending over narrow flanking bays and then projecting forward over giant Corinthian pilastered corner towers. A pedimented gable is set back behind the portico. A half-circular, domed entrance vestibule protrudes into the portico, abutting the columns, with doorways following the curve. Rosette plaques and squat, pilastered windows are recessed on the first floor. The narrow flanking bays feature cartouches and round-headed lights. The towers have round-arched windows with pediments supported by consoles, while the ground floor windows have eared architraves. The eaves cornice, studded with lion heads, extends along the brick sides and includes a recessed round-arched window bay. The building features a vermiculated plinth.
The interior remains largely intact, apart from the removal of pews. The vestibule, projecting into the portico, has a compartmented dome. The main chapel has a lofty interior with a deep cove to the compartmented ceiling, featuring elaborate plasterwork and large decorative 'trumpet' vents to each compartment. An ornate acanthus and drop finialed frame with a square panel containing a rose sits above the organ loft apse. A curved gallery runs around the space, supported by cast-iron columns with foliate capitals, providing a vast seating capacity. A screen of similar ornate cast-iron columns supports a corbelled coved ceiling at a higher level above the entrance. Despite its change of use, the interior has been little altered.
