Description

The Community Centre, formerly the Church of St Matthew, is an Anglican church located on St Matthew's Street in Holbeck, Leeds. It was built between 1829 and 1832, with a spire added in the mid-19th century and later converted for community use in the 20th century. Designed by architect R.D. Chantrell for the Church Commissioners, the building is constructed of coursed gritstone ashlar and features a slate roof.

The church has a traditional layout consisting of a nave, chancel, and north and south aisles, but lacks a clerestory. The exterior is characterized by tall lancet windows in the aisles and a geometrical traceried east window in the chancel, along with plain pinnacles at the corners. The west tower is topped with a broach spire and also has pinnacles.

Inside, the church has a seven-bay body with a gallery on three sides, supported by thin cast-iron columns. The east and west ends project for the chancel and tower, respectively, while the corners are filled with vestries or staircases that have lower roofs to enhance visual interest. Originally, the church could accommodate 1,200 worshippers and was built at a cost of £3,734 18s 4 1/2d. It is one of four churches designed with a similar plan during this period and belongs to the second group of Church Commissioners' churches, built in Early English style, which was a more economical choice compared to the Decorated Gothic style of the first phase.
