Description
The Former Marshall Mills Schoolroom is a building located on Sweet Street in Holbeck, Leeds. It was likely constructed in 1822 for John Marshall's flax mill. The structure is made of brown brick and is rendered on three sides, topped with a hipped slate roof. It stands two stories tall, featuring three first-floor windows on the south side and five on the north side, one of which is blocked. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches, and there is probably a blocked doorway on the right side of the north elevation. The interior has not been inspected. This building is significant as a remnant of a mill school that served the employees of Marshall Mills, which had over 500 children under the age of 13 among its 2,600 workers by 1840. The school was integrated into the layout of the Temple Mill on Marshall Street, with the west wall of the mill realigned to accommodate the east end and rear yard of the school.
