Description

Numbers 31 and 31A Baldock Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. Originally built in the 17th century, it was refronted and significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with a yellow brick front and a machine-tiled roof that is hidden behind a parapet, complete with stone coping and a dentil brick cornice.

On the left side, shared with No. 29, there is a tall red chimneystack that has four clustered octagonal shafts and a square plan with oversailing courses and caps. The building has two storeys. The first floor contains three modern windows that have replaced the former sash windows, featuring top-hung casement vents set in reveals under rubbed flat arches.

The ground floor has a 19th-century shopfront that includes pilasters, consoles, a cornice, and a former blind box. There is a recessed canted entrance with modern glazed doors and plate glass windows, which are closed but have pierced cast-iron strip ventilators above. The timber cills are moulded and sit over cement stall risers. Additionally, there is an arched entrance on the right side that leads to a twitchell.

At the rear, long outshoots have been partly rebuilt to form Giffin's Yard in the 19th century, which is known as one of the most densely populated urban housing groups.
