House. c1840, rebuilt on previously developed site. Yellow-grey brick, laid to Flemish bond, now colourwashed, with red painted quoins and rubbed arches over windows. 3 course brick plat band at second floor level of moulded stretchers alternating with flush headers, between 2 plain courses. Brick cornice above second floor windows with projecting dentils alternating with moulded bricks, parapet with stone coping, Welsh slate roof. Chimneystacks left and right with projecting moulded brick offsets and oversailing courses and tapered square pots. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, joined to No.16 (qv) at right above carriageway. First floor and second floor 2 triple-light sash windows, with plate glass in main buildings, 1 single-light sash, with plate glass, above carriageway. All windows recessed, with brick reveals. Ground floor has rusticated stucco piers and plat band at first floor level above 1970s shopfront. Half-brick break in facade at right with carriageway and 2 storeys above recessed. North flank wall includes bands of Hitch Patent brickwork. 2 storey brick rear outshoot, part rendered, with some Hitch brickwork. RCHM (and English Houses p.172) suggest No.18 as an historic inn site, with Nos 14 and 16 (qv). (Smith JT: English Houses 1200-1800.
