Description
No. 18 Baldock Street is a house built around 1840 on a previously developed site in Ware Town. The building features yellow-grey brick laid in Flemish bond, which has been colourwashed, with red painted quoins and rubbed arches over the windows. A three-course brick plat band is present at the second floor level, made of moulded stretchers alternating with flush headers, situated between two plain courses. There is a brick cornice above the second floor windows, adorned with projecting dentils and moulded bricks, and a parapet with stone coping. The roof is covered with Welsh slate.
The exterior of the house is three storeys high and is joined to No. 16 on the right above a carriageway. The first and second floors each have two triple-light sash windows with plate glass, while there is a single-light sash window with plate glass above the carriageway. All windows are recessed with brick reveals. The ground floor features rusticated stucco piers and a plat band at the first floor level above a 1970s shopfront. There is a half-brick break in the facade on the right, leading to the carriageway, with two storeys above that are recessed. The north flank wall includes bands of Hitch Patent brickwork. At the rear, there is a two-storey brick outshoot that is partially rendered and includes some Hitch brickwork. Historical references suggest that No. 18 may have been an inn site, along with Nos. 14 and 16.
