Description
Numbers 22 and 22A, B, C, D, and E are a house that has been converted into ground floor shops with offices above. The building dates from the 17th century, with an early 18th-century front and 19th-century shopfronts. It features a timber-framed structure with a plastered front and masonry lining. The roof is old and tiled, with a casement box dormer on the left side, above a cornice with modillions. There is a red brick chimneystack that has a projecting band, dentils, and oversailing courses that are shared with Number 20.
On the first floor, there are four sash windows with divided glazing, which are flush set with exposed boxes. The cornice at the first floor level has carved consoles. The ground floor includes a central doorway that has an architrave surround, a small fanlight, and a cornice. The door itself has five panels: two lower flush panels, a central recessed flush panel with a raised surround, and two upper recessed flush panels with raised moulded surrounds. The left-hand shopfront features a central canted entrance with two half-glazed doors and plate glass display windows above a brown glazed brick stallriser. The right-hand shopfront is similar but has 20th-century alterations.
Inside, the building has exposed timber-framing and a side purlin roof with pegged rafters, which can be seen in the attics. The rear outshoots are also timber-framed and plastered, with old tiled roofs.
