Description
37 and 39 Baldock Street is a former house now serving as shops with offices above. The building dates back to the 16th century and is timber-framed, though it has been refaced, altered, and extended in the 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. It stands two storeys tall and is constructed of colourwashed brick. The old tiled roof is hidden behind a low parapet and features a brick chimney with four diagonally set shafts.
On the first floor, there are four sash windows with divided glazing and a brick dentil cornice. The ground floor has 20th-century shop windows on the left side (No. 37) and a 19th-century shopfront on the right side (No. 39), which includes plate glass windows, moulded glazing mullions, a timber stallriser and cill, as well as moulded consoles and a cornice.
Inside No. 39, the first floor features a cambered tie-beam with mortices for bracing, although the bracing is now missing. The roof has a three-bay crown post structure with plain posts and fore and aft bracing to the collar purlin. The absence of smoke blackening suggests that the building was originally unheated.
