Description

Number 27 is a house that has been converted into commercial premises on the ground floor. It dates from the early to mid 18th century, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of dark red brick with orange dressings in Flemish bond, featuring plat bands at the first and second floor levels. A tall parapet with stone copings conceals twin hipped old tiled roofs. The structure has three storeys, with the first and second floors displaying five sash windows that have slightly recessed exposed boxes and plate glass, indicating 19th-century replacements, all set under segmental rubbed arches. The ground floor features mid-20th-century shop windows on either side of a central doorway, which is currently missing its door and has been replaced by a roller shutter. The doorcase includes Roman Ionic fluted pilasters, a broken entablature, and a pediment. The rear elevation has five recessed sash windows with glazing bars, plat bands, and curved and ramped ends to the tall parapet. There is a late 19th-century single-storey attached outbuilding at the south-west corner, built of red brick with a hipped machine-tiled roof, which may have served as a former counting house. An attached tall plum red brick boundary wall, laid to English bond, connects with the adjacent Number 29.
