Description
This is an 18th-century house, possibly built on the site of an earlier structure, with alterations made in the early 20th century. It now incorporates a ground-floor shop. The house is constructed of red and grey brick, with cherry red flush quoins, brick dressings, and a moulded brick cornice with dentils. A tall parapet conceals a hipped roof covered in old red tiles. The front elevation has two storeys and attics, with six flush sash windows with glazing bars of 5-12 panes, and one of 8 panes, set under cutter flat arches above a plat band at first floor level. The ground floor shopfront was inserted in the early 20th century, with plain flanking pilasters and carved consoles, a plain lower fascia, and an upper fascia with a coved moulding. A central entrance has twin-leaf glazed doors set in a canted recess, flanked by display windows with small paned-leaded lights above. Cellar vents are pierced and patterned cast iron. A 6-panelled door is located to the right, set in an architrave surround. The rear elevation is of red and grey brick in Flemish bond, with grey headers. It has a parapet with stone coping above a hipped ‘M’ roof covered in modern concrete interlocking tiles. Tall, multi-shaft red brick chimney stacks are present. Two windows with glazing bars are set under segmental arches on the left, while an early 20th-century square oriel extension, supported on brackets and a glazed canopy, is on the right.
