Description

No. 6 Baldock Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 17th century, with a front added in the 19th century and a 19th-century rear wing. The building features a timber frame with a stucco front over brick and has a steeply pitched old tiled roof above a cornice and parapet. The front range originally had three box dormers, which were removed in the 1980s. The rear range has a lower pitch Welsh slated roof with a hipped end.

The exterior is two storeys tall, with cellars and attics. On the first floor, there are five sash windows with glazing bars set in reveals, along with one blank recess, the third from the right. The ground floor is rusticated above a cement plinth, with a cellar vent on the left. There are four ground floor sash windows, also with glazing bars and set in reveals, and a recessed central door with six fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight above. To the right, there is a carriageway with a twin ledged, braced, and battened door that includes a wicket in the right-hand leaf. A 19th-century entry from the carriageway features a half-glazed door with ornamental leaded lights, a leaded six-pane fanlight, and a leaded ten-pane sidelight. The rear of the building has a projecting bay with French casements on the first floor and a tall twelve-pane sash window, which is complemented by a Regency cast-iron balcony front.

Inside, the first floor includes panelled rooms. Historically, this property, along with Nos 2 and 4 Baldock Street, came under the ownership of Trinity College, Cambridge at the Reformation as part of the endowment established by Henry VIII. The land originally belonged to the Carthusian Priory at Sheen before that.
