Description
Number 57 is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features a façade made of flints set in pitch, with a rough cobble course alternating with a squared and knapped course, and painted brick dressings. The right side of the building is covered in stucco. The roof is gambrel and covered with tiles.
The building has three storeys and a dormer over a basement, with a two-window range. The entire ground floor is occupied by a 20th-century shop front and entrance. On the first floor, there are two canted bays, each with tripartite, flat-arched windows. The second floor has three camber-arched windows with projecting sills, which, although similar in size, are not arranged symmetrically. The lintels of these windows meet a brick dentil cornice. The corners of the building have brick quoin strips, and all upper floor windows have brick dressings. Between the second and third windows on the first floor, there is an iron shop bracket from the 19th century.
This listing also includes part of the cast-iron railings that enclose the basement area of Number 58 Ship Street, which are actually attached to Number 57.
