Description
31, 31A, and 31B Horse Market is a house that has been converted into shops and a club. It dates from the mid-18th century, with 20th-century shop fronts added. The building is made of coursed squared stone and features rusticated quoins. The roof is covered with concrete tiles and has rendered and stone chimneys.
The structure has three storeys and a five-window range. There are two steps leading up to a central half-glazed door that has been renewed, set within a pedimented architrave supported by scroll brackets. The flanking shop fronts, which are from the 20th century, have plate-glass windows and each includes a recessed central entrance. A continuous floor band aligns with the pediment above the door.
All the upper windows have architraves. The first-floor windows are plain sashes set on a sill band, with the space below used as a shop fascia for the left shop. The second floor features smaller 9-pane sashes, with a string course between the architraves at the lintels. The top of the building has an entablature with a gutter cornice. The roof is adorned with end chimneys, where the lower parts are rendered and the upper parts are made of coursed squared stone, finished with cyma cornices. The interiors were not inspected. Nos 31A and 31B were listed separately on February 22, 1973.
