Description

No. 23 Horse Market is a house that has been converted into a shop, built around 1850. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with rubble returns and features a roof covered in French tiles. It is designed in a classical style and stands three storeys high with a three-window range.

There is a step up to a 10-panel door, which has a blocked overlight above it, flanked by two quadrant panels within a round-headed arch that is adorned with rusticated voussoirs on the ground floor. The building has a stone plinth and rusticated quoins. The shop front on the ground floor consists of plate-glass windows beneath a large fascia. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows set in architraves, topped with floating cornices on consoles, while the second floor features 9-pane sash windows in lugged architraves. Rusticated quoins are present above the first floor, and there is a modillioned eaves cornice. The roof is equipped with corniced end chimneys located at the center of the front slope, which are topped with Tudor-style octagonal corniced chimney pots.

The interior has not been inspected. A plaque on the left side of the building indicates that it was once the site of the old storehouse and hospital of the Durham Militia, established in 1759.
