Description

12 and 14 Horse Market is a house that later became an inn and is now used as shops and a flat. It was built in the late 18th century, with shopfronts added in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with painted quoins and ashlar dressings. It features a roof made of graduated stone slates, complete with stone ridge and gable copings and rendered chimneys.

The structure has three storeys and a three-window range. The central entrance has a painted plain stone surround and a late 20th-century wrought-iron gate. On the left side, the shop front includes an entrance with a half-glazed door and overlight next to a shallow plate-glass bay window, which is topped by an entablature. The right shop front features fluted angle pilasters and segmental-headed lights with glazing bars in the window, which may have been renewed, along with a partly-glazed door on the right with a small overlight, also under an entablature. The shops have stall risers made of coursed squared stone.

The first floor has 16-pane sash windows and the second floor has 9-pane sash windows, both set in projecting stone surrounds. The roof is adorned with stone gable coping that rests on kneelers with pendant moulding, and the end chimneys are rendered with ashlar bands. The interior has not been inspected.
