Description

34 and 36 Horse Market is a house that has been converted into two shops and a flat. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and is built of coursed squared stone with ashlar quoins and dressings. The roof is made of graduated stone slates with a stone ridge, chimneys, and kneelers. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range.

The central entrance features a low six-panel passage door set in a tooled stone surround with a cornice above. To the left, there is a late 19th-century shop front that includes a recessed doorway on the right with a tiled floor, slender mullions, and end pilasters with gabled fluted curved brackets supporting the fascia and cornice. The smaller shop front on the right has a door on the left and a window with transomed upper lights, wide pilasters, and a plain fascia.

On the first floor, there is a corniced canted bay window on the left with a two-pane upper sash, while the centre and right windows are 16-pane sashes that have flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The roof has a right gable that is overlaid by an adjacent building, but a cyma-moulded kneeler projects above the quoins. There are stone chimneys at each end of the building. The interior has not been inspected.
