Description

No. 40 Horse Market is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century and a restoration around 1990. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and features a roof made of Welsh slate and stone slate, complete with stone gable copings and chimneys.

The structure is two storeys high and has a two-window range, with a low extension on the right side. The main house has a plain stone surround around a renewed half-glazed door located to the left of the center. On either side of the door, there are low canted-bay shop windows with plain sash windows, one on the left and three on the right. The first floor features tall sashes with glazing bars set in architraves, which have projecting moulded sills. The roof is steeply pitched, with the right gable coping intact while the left side is overlaid by an adjacent building. The gable has kneelers with cyma mouldings, and there is a plain coped chimney at the right end.

The right extension, which is two storeys lower, has a plain stone surround around a boarded door situated beneath a 9-pane sash window, also in a plain stone surround. Its roof is covered with graduated stone slates and has a stone ridge. The right return of the main house includes an attic light at the front part of the gable, featuring a 4-pane horizontal sliding sash set in a renewed flat stone lintel with a projecting stone sill.

Inside, the roof is supported by upper crucks with two levels of purlins resting on external wedges, and it includes two collars, with the lower collar projecting above the lower purlins. Some of the collars and purlins have been renewed, along with a narrow ridge piece.
