Description

42 and 42A Horse Market is a house that has been converted into two shops and offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. The building is made of coursed squared stone with painted ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a roof of graduated stone slates featuring a stone ridge, gable copings, and chimneys. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.

The central entrance features a painted tooled stone surround with a six-panel door and an overlight. Each shop front on either side has shallow square corniced projections with a recessed door on the right. The right shop includes a canted shop window, while the left has a renewed fascia and a coursed squared stone stall-riser. The first-floor windows are plain sashes set in projecting painted stone surrounds. The roof displays end gable copings on cyma-moulded kneelers, with the right coping and kneeler having been renewed and widened to cover a strengthening extra leaf on the right return gable. This alteration likely occurred when the adjacent plot was cleared for the construction of the Trinity Methodist Church. Additionally, there is a renewed surround to a round-headed window at the attic level. Inside, the first-floor offices feature six-panel doors.
