Description

Nos. 42A and 44 on High Street is a house that has been converted into a pair of shops and flats. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is rendered, likely over brick, and features painted sandstone dressings. It has a plain tile roof and stands three storeys high. The exterior includes chamfered quoins, a parapet with a frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course with rounded coping, along with parapeted gable ends. There are integral brick end stacks, with the right stack being larger and T-sectioned, and a brick stack located off-centre to the left on the ridge.

The façade consists of five bays with segmental-headed boxed four-pane sash windows that have moulded stone cills, half-H panels beneath, lintels, and raised keystones with moulded tops. A lead downpipe is situated between the second and third bays from the left, featuring a moulded semi-circular rainwater head. The building has two 19th-century shop fronts; the right one has plate-glass windows flanking a central recessed glazed door, a deep fascia, and panelled end-pilasters with paired brackets above. The left shop front has plate-glass windows that curve around the corner to the left, a recessed glazed door to the right, and a deep fascia with a cornice.

To the left of the second-floor window on the left side, there is an oval tie plate. There is also a rendered gabled wing, which may be timber framed, indicated by pairs of purlins and a steep roof pitch. At the rear, there is an early 19th-century doorway with a doorcase that includes incised pilaster strips, an entablature, and a cornice. The interiors have not been inspected.
