Description
The Red Cow Public House is a building that dates back to around 1600 and was remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. It features a timber frame with plastered infill, while the front wall has been rebuilt in rendered brick that is lined to resemble ashlar. The building has been extended at the rear in red brick and has a slate roof. The framing consists of square panels with straight braces, and it follows a lobby-entry plan with three framed bays.
The structure is two stories tall, with a rear wing that has one story and an attic. It has a dentil brick eaves cornice and an off-centre brick ridge stack located to the right. The windows are 20th-century wooden casements, with two on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The entrance features a roughly central early 19th-century six-panelled door, where the lower two panels are beaded flush, framed by pilasters supporting a frieze. To the right, there is a slightly lower set-back section with a 20th-century two-light wooden casement on the first floor, three small ground-floor casements, and a boarded door. The rear wing, which is from the 18th century, has an integral brick end stack. The interior has only been partly inspected, but timber framing has been noted.
