Description

No. 19 and 19A, Bluegates is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and was remodeled in the mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame on a brick plinth with painted brick nogging, and it has been refaced in brick with planted timbers. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The framing consists of square panels with closely spaced studs in the rear range. Inside, there are a pair of deep chamfered beams with broach stops beneath the passageway, along with ogee-stopped chamfered joists. The structure is L-shaped, comprising two framed bays with a wing at the rear, and it stands two storeys high. The eaves cornice is made of dentil brick, and the gable end to the right is parapeted and was rebuilt in the 20th century with a blue-brick coping. On the first floor, there are two small-paned wooden casements from the 20th century, and to the right, there is a modern shop front. To the left, there is a wide passageway known as Bluegates, which has a blocked ogee-arched doorway. The two-storey timber-framed rear wing features a pair of first-floor four-pane boxed sashes and a pair of ground-floor small two-light wooden casements flanking a four-panelled door. The interior has not been inspected. The listing also includes No. 19A, Bluegates.
