Description

This is an early to mid-18th century house, later used as a shop and surgery. It is located on the south-west side of High Street in Whitchurch. The house is constructed of red brick, painted to the front, with sandstone dressings. It has a plain tile roof.

The building is two storeys high, with chamfered stone quoins and parapeted gable ends featuring rounded copings and moulded stone kneelers. Originally, there were three bays, though the central window on the first floor has been blocked. The remaining first-floor windows are tall plate-glass sashes with painted moulded stone cills. The window heads are formed of painted gauged brick, each with a raised keystone. A late 20th century shopfront is visible on the ground floor, with a plate-glass window to the left and a half-glazed door to the right. A Sun Fire Insurance plate, number 414194, is set between the blocked first-floor window and the window on the right-hand side.

Inside, a dog-leg staircase dates from after 1720. Only the section leading to the attic remains, and it features an open string, column-on-vase balusters (two per tread), a moulded handrail, and square newel posts. A further eighteenth century door, with two raised and fielded panels, is located between the front and rear ranges of the house, on the first floor.
